18/01/19 IMoves Great Fire of London Dance
During our PE session we have started to develop a Great Fire of London dance. The dance takes us through the different stages of the fire, from the very beginning in the bakery in Pudding Lane in 1666, as the flames and fire develop and on to the reactions of the people as they tried to escape. It has been a great opportunity to explore the events through movement and dance and the children have shown some wonderful creativity. Next week we will be moving on to the rebuilding of the city!
16/01/19- Fire! Fire!
Our topic this half term in Year 2 is The Great Fire of London. We have already been asking lots of questions and gathering lots of information about this historical event and we have been enjoying a range of cross-curricular activities based on this subject. In History and Art we have been learning about how Tudor houses were different from the houses and buildings we have today and we have created some amazing Tudor houses ready for our Great Fire of London display.
10/01/19 - Handwriting
We have begun to join our handwriting during our handwriting lessons and we will soon begin to join in our workbooks in the upcoming weeks. To help support your child with their handwriting please encourage them to practise at home. To ensure that there is consistency please ensure that your child follows our 'Handwriting Police' rules:
1. Never join from capital letters
2. Never join from: g, p, j, y, q, b, x, s or to z
3. Think before you take your pencil off of the paper!
Thank you for your continued support!
14/12/18- Christmas in the Owls
We have thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas celebrations and activities in the Owls this week. Our Nativity project trip was a really good opportunity to learn more about the very first Christmas and the birth of Jesus. We participated in a fun quiz to test our knowledge of the Christmas story, it was boys versus girls and the Owls were extremely competitive!
We then went on to watch the Nativity being performed with some of the Owls children also having the opportunity to dress up and re-enact the key parts of the story on stage. The whole experience was really fun and interactive for all the children and we were very proud of the way in which the Owls represented our school.
Today has been our Christmas jumper day and we have had a lovely Christmas dinner with the teachers and teaching assistants with lots of fun festive music in the canteen. We are very much looking forward to seeing Mr Custard on Monday and our Christmas party on Tuesday. Please also remember to join us for our Christmas sing-along on Wednesday too!
6/12/18- Christmas concert.
Today was the last of the KS1 Christmas concerts to parents! We are incredibly proud of all of the children for learning their words, songs, dances and stage directions and we thought their performances were fabulous!
Many thanks for your support with helping the children to prepare for it and we hope that you enjoyed it!

03/12/18 - Homework Links
Apologies if your homework links are not working. I tested them before we sent the Parent Mail and they are working in school. It may be that you need to use a different browser (Google Chrome) or update your flash player. If not please do not worry, there will be opportunities for them to use these games in school.
In Science we have been learning about electricity as part of our topic 'A Splash of Colour'. We were given some wires, a bulb and a battery box and asked to work with a partner to see if we could complete a simple circuit to make our bulb light up.
We discussed electricity as a whole class and within our groups and I was very impressed with the Owls knowledge about how electricity works and why we need it. We are going to continue thinking about different light sources in our topic lessons.
21/11/18- Kadinsky Art
In Art we have been learning about the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky. We have been learning about the techniques he uses in his work and we have thought carefully about his use of colour. We looked in particular at his work, 'Squares with Concentric Circles' and then created our own pieces of art work using bright and colourful pastels.
Our focus this half term for Computing is an app called ScratchJR. We have started to learn about coding and how to operate simple programs. The children have begun to explore this app and have initially looked at how to create and change their 'Sprite' (character) and how to develop the background for their script. We will be moving on to programming their sprite to complete a set of actions. It would be great if the children have an opportunity to access the app at home too but there will also be plenty of opportunities to develop this further in school!
14/11/18- Paul Klee pastel pictures
During our Art lesson this week we have been learning about the artist Paul Klee. We looked at how he used a variety of shapes, lines and patterns to create abstract pictures and we explored using pastels to create our own. We had to first consider how to develop a coloured background with blocks and then add lines and shapes in black. I think you will agree that this is really effective in creating some wonderful Art work!
08/11/18- Remembrance Day Art.
This week we have been learning about Remembrance Day. In Art we have worked on creating a silhouette picture. To start with, we used paints to create a sunset wash using orange, yellow and red. We waited for them to dry and then we used templates of an aeroplane, soldier and poppy to create silhouettes.
08/11/18- Diwali Dancing with Darren
We have been very lucky to have the opportunity to celebrate Diwali by learning some new dances with Darren. The Owls were able to demonstrate what wonderful performers they are when we learnt both a traditional Indian dance and a Bollywood style dance. Everyone participated with real enthusiasm and we can't wait to work with Darren again in February!
06/11/18 - Reminders
Tomorrow there is a meeting for Y2 parents. Please sign up to attend a session via Survey Monkey.
We hope to see you there as we feel it will be a really beneficial session for ideas when supporting your child at home in English and maths.
Next week are our class assemblies to parents, please check the dates section to find your class.
See you all soon!
01/11/18 - Computing
This half term we will be teaching the children to use coding. We use a programme called 'ScratchJr'. This is a free app that can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. If you wish to introduce this to your child at home, that would be great. Please do not worry if you do not have access as we will be using it a lot in school.
See below for a photo of the correct app.
Please note: The internet browser version is very different and we will not be using this one in school.
01/11/18- Making Sparklers
In English this week we have been learning about how to use and follow instructions. We have been writing some instructions to remind us all of Firework Safety and today we have followed a set of instructions to make a foil sparkler. We carefully folded the foil around an art straw and cut out some strips at the top. Once the foil was firmly wrapped around the straw we then glued and dipped our sparklers into some glitter!
31/10/18- Firework biscuits
This week we have been introducing our new topic 'A splash of Colour'. We have thoroughly enjoyed designing our own biscuits and they tasted delicious!
17/10/18 - Reading
Just a reminder that in Y2 we are focusing on the children's understanding of the text that they are reading, not just their fluency. Please continue to use the bookmarks provided, to ask your child questions about the book. If they are bringing chapter books home, they can keep these for more than one day which will allow you to discuss the text in more detail.
Thank you for your continued support
05/10/18 - Mathletics and Reading Eggs Meetings
Thank you to those of you who attended the refresher meetings. If you were unable to attend and would like a copy of the information sheets, please put a note in your child's yellow diary.
Just a reminder, on our school website under Parents Information, Useful Information, there is our school Calculation Policy. Please refer to this when supporting your child at home.
Thank you for your continued support
This week in the Owls we have been discussing healthy eating, good hygiene and safe cooking practices. We have been learning how to peel, chop and prepare a selection of fruit which we then used to design our own fruit trees.
During our Art lessons over the past two weeks we have been learning about George Seurat's pointillism and how to use this technique to create paintings of trees. We have placed tiny dots of different coloured paint closely together on the paper (using cotton buds) and we have observed how the colours blend together when they are viewed from a distance. Our wonderful work is now going to be displayed ready for Parents evening.
26/09/18 - Spelling Quiz
This Friday our quiz will consist of all 10 words given so far this year, so please keep learning your spellings at home.
21/09/18 - Parent Consultations
Your child's letter will have been sent home in their book bag today. Appointments are allocated on a first come, first serve, basis so please return as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance
Tree photos in our Computing lesson.
We have learning about how to take a good photo including reviewing them and editing them on the IPad. We checked the rules for taking a good photo and went outside to take photos of the trees in our school grounds. We then shared our photos and decided what we liked about them and how we could change them and edit them to make them even better.
20/09/18 - Jeans for Genes Day
Tomorrow we are wearing non uniform to include something denim, in support of Jeans for Genes Day. This could be jeans, a denim dress, denim shorts or a jacket. There is an optional donation, if you wish to donate please send money into school in a named and labelled envelope.
Thanks in advance
Our Woodland Warriors topic.
This half term we will be focusing on learning about trees and developing our awareness of our local environment. We have already done some wonderful sketching of trees in our school grounds and we have learnt about how to take a good photo on our IPads of trees during our computing lesson.
We have also thought carefully about how we can look after our environment and we completed a litter tally sheet of all the different types of litter in our school grounds. Sadly we did find some litter however we have discussed all the ways in which we can ensure we keep our environment clean and tidy and why this is so important.
Settling into the Owls class.
We have already settled very quickly into the Owls class and our new daily routine. I am very pleased to say that all the Owl's have been working hard and have already shown that they are very much ready to be in Year 2! In the mornings we have been enjoying some decision time when we first arrive and we have been keen to catch up with our friends after the long summer break.
Welcome to the Owls class page. We will be updating you with lots of information about what we are learning in class and our current topic. This page will include special events and occasions when we have had visitors in school. We are very much looking forward to an exciting year ahead!
